Purpose and Definition of the Educational Project
The educational project is a strategic tool through which an educational institution can define and communicate to the educational community, the policy orientations, the action priorities, and the expected results to ensure the educational success for all students, in both the youth and adult sectors. It reflects the characteristics and needs of the students who attend the educational institution and the expectations expressed in the community in terms of education. Resulting from a consensus, the educational project is prepared and implemented through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders concerned with the institution: students, parents, teachers and other staff members (daycare service, support staff, etc.), as well as the community and school board representatives.
School Context (internal and external environments)
In this section, the institution analyzes the external and internal environments: the context in which it is evolving and its main challenges. (EA, 97.1)
- Overview of the education in the surrounding environment;
- Summary of promising actions in the community: the strengths;
- Overall picture of the results and areas of vulnerability;
- Student needs in the schools and centres;
- Main challenges related to the academic success of the community;
- Use of certain national indicators;
- Characteristics and expectations of the community, etc.
About us
On September 30th, 2018, there were 462 students registered at South Hull School. South Hull School is a dual-track school offering programs in English and French Immersion; 42 % of the students are registered in the English program and 58% of the students are registered in the French Immersion program. 9% of the students registered at South Hull School are self-identified as Indigenous. There are 90 students (19% of the student population) who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Amongst the student population, there are a variety of first languages spoken at home: English (80%), French (7%), Indigenous (6%), and Other (7%).
On a rating from 1 to 10, with 1 being the highest socio-economic status, South Hull School is rated 2, which therefore suggests that the majority of students should have the necessary support available in their home environment to promote learning.
Its Governing Board is comprised of 18 members. South Hull School has a very active Home and School Association and a very active daycare program with more than 200 students registered as full-time.
The staff at South Hull is comprised of: 1 principal, 21 homeroom teachers, 5 specialist teachers (including one full-time and one part-time resource teacher), 6 attendants, 2 special needs technicians, 2 office assistants, 2 caretakers, 1 daycare technician, 1 educator principal class, 10 daycare educators and 3 lunch supervisors. South Hull School is committed to promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all students and staff. The Not in My School and Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS) initiatives continue to promote a safe and non-violent school environment, empowering students to be leaders in their school.
To promote student achievement and well-being, the school has received a variety of ministry grants including grants for: homework club, cultural events, health and wellness activities, professional development, Anti-Violence Anti-Bullying (AVAB) and Spiritual Animation.
Each year, South Hull participates in the annual Terry Fox Run. During the 2018-2019 school year, students and staff raised more than $20 000. The South Hull community is very dedicated and generous. They have raised over $100 000 in the last ten years for the Terry Fox Foundation. The school also participates annually in Scholastic Book Fairs to promote literacy, raising roughly $2 000 per year to support the purchase of books.
Challenges, Orientations, Objectives, Indicators and Targets Specific to the Institution
- Comply with the terms established by the Minister to govern the coordination of the entire process (EA, Section 459.3)
- Respect the freedom of conscience and religion of students, parents and school staff (EA, Section 37)
- Analyze if other objectives would be relevant while respecting the portrait of the environment.
Our challenges
The staff has been trained through various professional development workshops and conferences. Yet the school is not obtaining the results expected in FSL, but we have observed improvement in end of year results from second cycle to third cycle, when comparing the same group of students.
French Second Language (FSL), which is taught in the English stream, is an area of concern in particular. It was felt that the increase of FSL from 200 minutes (4 periods a week) to 250 minutes (5 periods) would expose the students to hearing the French language daily which according to research is what is needed to learn a second language. Despite the increase in FSL minutes in the schedule, many students in the English stream are still performing well below grade level in FSL. This is especially true for students for whom French is a third language.
When comparing student results within the two programs (English and French Immersion) there is a notable achievement gap in all core subjects. The staff at South Hull continue to strive to find strategies to improve learning and results for this group of students.
The WQSB math consultant worked with all math teachers with emphasis on situational problems, Mastery of Mathematical Concepts and Processes (MMCPs) and problems that engage students with cognitive dissonance. Workshops were given and will continue to be offered to guide teachers in the use of manipulatives to increase understanding of math concepts for all learners. Students will use the IXL Learning website for practice in class and at home.
The WQSB literacy consultants for ELA and FSL continue to support our teaching staff to develop skills and strategies to improve literacy outcomes in both languages (SoundPrints and ApprocheSignature).

We have many students for whom French is a third language. These students begin learning French at varying stages of their educational journey. What we need to focus on is the fact that students improve from 2nd to 3rd cycle so our teaching strategies are effective.
